Our Story

Qatamaran draws on 120 years of tailoring experience from the house of Syed Bawkher, bringing a fresh perspective to tailoring from our workshop in Chennai.

Our heritage connects us to Savile Row. We carry those traditions forward with clothes that feel relevant to a younger generation, retaining the care and character of traditional tailoring while finding new ways to wear it.

These methods give us greater control over the clothes we make, from their overall balance to the smallest finishing detail. At Qatamaran, we bring generations of tailoring knowledge together to create clothes that are carefully considered and approachable. Thoughtful construction, traditional handwork and the time to do both well.

We also want to bring attention back to the details around the clothes.  functional features and finishing touches have long been part of British tailoring, yet many receive less consideration today. For us, they are part of the pleasure of dressing: small choices that give familiar clothes a personal character.

That attention begins at the cutting table. Every piece is cut by hand, allowing the cutter to consider how the cloth lies, position the pattern carefully and make precise adjustments to its shape. It takes time and judgement, establishing the foundations for how the finished garment will fall.

One tailor then takes responsibility for constructing each piece. Working on the garment as a whole gives them an understanding of how its parts relate, and how an adjustment in one area affects another. It also gives them the time to notice and resolve small details as the work progresses.

Sleeves and collars are attached by hand, allowing the tailor to shape the cloth as it is joined. At the collar, this helps it sit closely and comfortably around the neck. At the sleeve, it allows fullness to be distributed carefully around the armhole, controlling the shape of the shoulder and the way the sleeve hangs.

Our buttonholes are handstitched, with each stitch placed and tightened individually. This gives the tailor control over their shape and tension, creating a neatly defined edge and a distinctive finish.
